My Role: Lead and Solo Product Designer
Timeline: 3 months
Team: Ross Miller: Software Engineer and Aaron Smith: Product Manager
Result: Adding video capabilities into the Openpath mobile app to launch with our new video intercom reader hardware product.
Research
Before beginning our process, we talked to users interested in using our new hardware product and conducted some comparative and competitive research on other video management mobile software.
Once we created this competitive analysis, we were able to look closely at our current flows in the mobile app and see where our new video product could fit in.
Design Studio
The Design Studio methodology is a rapid iterative process that allows teams of varied individuals to work together to solve design problems. It is about collaboration, iteration, and idea creation.
Executing this design studio helped us think deeper about the flow we wanted our users to follow and weed out any other edge cases we may have not brainstormed previously. We invited product managers, designers, and engineers to get a strong diverse opinion.
What we learned was that we were trying to add in too many features without focusing hard on the main scope. We decided that while we could add these in eventually, we needed to focus on the two main flows which were: in-app incoming calls and viewing past video events.
Personas
After holding a design studio session, we focused on two main use cases to build out the prototype.
Prototyping
Usability Testing
Using both internal Openpath testers and a software called Maze, I investigated our flow and process to see if we can confirm that the integration would fit into the current product.
Final Prototype
What I learned
Involving Developers Early - Involving our development team early on in the process with the design studio exercise allowed us to sort out any technical and feature limitations early on.
Maze - Maze is an amazing tool. We used it not only for usability testing but also to survey our internal team on any specific blocks we were stuck on.
Feedback and Critique - When staring at my own wireframes as the only designer on this project, I felt like I was going crazy. Asking for critique and receiving it well was key for the success of the product.
